How to Use the Holidays to Market Your Business

Danielle Speciale • Dec 13, 2022

The holiday season is finally here! Not only is this the best time to enjoy a trip to New York City to see Rockefeller Center, go ice-skating with your friends, or visit the light show at Jones Beach, it's also the best time to show your business's holiday spirit on social media!

In a survey done by Statista, almost 30% of people said they would be using social media for holiday shopping, which is why now is the best time to make the best impression you can with your target audience so you can capture that new holiday business.

So, we're giving your business the gift of our insights, best practices, and recommendations on how you can take advantage of the holiday season to grow your social media following!

Host an Ugly Sweater Contest

Planning an office holiday party? Kick it up a notch and make it an ugly sweater party! Encourage your staff to come wearing the ugliest sweater money can buy and hold a contest with a prize at the end.

Not only is this a fantastic way to bond with your coworkers, but it serves as great interactive content for social media. Share all of your ugly sweater contestants on your story and include voting stickers such as the rating slider or a poll to let your followers choose a winner.

Besides engaging your audience, you're giving them a chance to get a glimpse at what your company culture is like and the fun that can be had by the business. Doing this always helps boost your business's image in the eyes of your followers.

Promote Your Holiday Products

Social media is one of the best places to promote your holiday products! If you have a collection of products that you sell during the holiday season, you can post collections of these products to get people interested in what you are selling.

Another good strategy is to create holiday checklists based around your products. These checklists outline the holiday essentials that your customers need to buy from your holiday product line. It's a great way to give your customers gift ideas and become exposed to the new festive products you are selling!

Here's an examples of a holiday checklists made by us.

Promote Your Holiday Products

Big fan of the holiday season? Share your excitement on social media! This can be a great opportunity to engage your audience by asking them what their favorite holiday activities are, what foods they like to eat, and even hold special raffles based around these questions.

A New York based business called Chip City took this idea to heart by making a post everyday until Christmas, and are asking holiday-related questions for people to answer in the comments section. At the end of each day, a random commenter is selected and they win a $25 gift card. This is an excellent way to showcase the brand's enjoyment of the holidays while garnering incredible engagement from their fans.

Another alternative to posting is making a story showcasing your business's holiday spirit while using the countdown sticker to count the days until your favorite holiday. Whichever method you choose, these are excellent ways to engage your audience during the holidays!

Additional Tips for Your Business

While this post mainly focused on social media tips for the holidays, we also compiled some general marketing and customer relations tips that can help set your business apart from others during the holiday season!

Offer Your Best Service, Discounts & Deals

For many, the holidays can be a stressful time. Many people get overwhelmed with shopping and planning for events, so you want to make sure that you are providing the best possible service for your customers during this time. The extra gratitude and patience will go a long way and increase the chances of creating a loyal customer in the future.

This also may sound like a given, but you should put a good amount of thought into what type of discounts or deals you want to offer to your customers. If you have sold holiday products in the past, see which ones have performed the best and create enticing deals promoting them. It's also a good idea to analyze your competition to see what kinds of deals they offer.

Seasonal Giveaways

Another good way to encourage new customers is to do a seasonal giveaway. An example of this could be entering everyone who buys a product or service into a raffle to win a free TV, or offering a free item like a gift card with a purchase of a certain amount or higher, which would give the customer a bonus even when buying for someone else.

This is a great way to bring in new customers as well as bring back your loyal customers who wish to participate in the raffle and get people excited about patronizing your business.

Utilize Email Marketing

Email marketing is a great way to get in touch with both old and new customers during the holidays. It is the easiest way to promote any type of holiday sales directly or promotions to your customers, and is one of the most cost effective ways to retain returning customers.

If you want to grow your list, this can tie back to the seasonal giveaways section where you can ask all of the participants to enter their email addresses so they can enter the competition. You can also collect their emails at checkout, both in-store and online, who can be targeted later with products they may be interested in.

Note that no matter how you collect emails, you need to get explicit permission from them saying that they want to receive promotional emails from you. This will help decrease the chances people will unsubscribe from you and potentially flag your emails as spam.

Advertise on Social Media

In a survey done by Statista, almost 30% of people said they would be using social media for holiday shopping. When you combine this with nearly 80% of the American adult population being active on Facebook in the last year, it is hard to deny the influence of social media.

Advertising on social media is a great place to achieve a plethora of holiday business goals. Social ads can help drive more physical traffic to your store, increase online sales, increase brand awareness, get more phone calls, and so much more!

You will want to make sure you are utilizing Facebook's built in advertising tools to reach a diverse range of potential customers during the holidays. You can learn more about advertising on Instagram post here, how to promote posts on Facebook here, and more about TikTok promotion here.
